Cannas or canna lilies are perennials with rhizomes related to the common ginger banana, the heliconia and the "bird of paradise". They are easy to plant and the flowers come in a wide variety of colours ranging from plain white to red, orange, yellow and pink. They are sometimes described as the 'Irises of the Tropics' with broad banana plant like leaves and soft, delicate blooms."Canna Rigolleto' has been chosen as the official flower for the City of Kuching South for its bright yellow blooms, which signify warmth and joy - attributes of a positive spirit and to reflect the attitude and disposition of the citizens of the City of Kuching South. Cannas are renowned for their simple beauty, bright diverse colours and elegant petals. A new breed with cream coloured bloom has been named "Princess Diana"- as a tribute to the enchanting beauty of the late Princess Diana. There is also a hybrid by the name "Canna Cleopatra" named after the ancient Egyptian Queen (having large yellow petals with red spots).

Originating, supposedly from the tropical regions of South and Central Americas the cannas are suitable in normal garden situation, in pots, in ponds or bog planting and they flourish in temperate and tropical climates. Well- tended they bloom freely throughout the year.
